Three years after ChatGPT reached a mass audience, the internet is expanding in two seemingly opposite directions. AI systems are compressing websites, articles and videos into direct answers, while digital entertainment companies are investing in places where people can eat, shop, play and spend an afternoon.
These developments share the same commercial logic. Businesses can no longer rely on attracting people to a website and holding their attention there. They need intellectual property that can travel, knowledge that search systems can cite, products that AI agents can use and experiences that people consider worth leaving home for.
The companies gaining ground in 2026 tend to control at least one of those assets. The weaker propositions depend on a speculative narrative, borrowed distribution or content that another company can reproduce almost instantly.
The Internet Is Becoming a Place
Netflix built its original business by bringing entertainment into the home. Netflix House asks audiences to travel in the opposite direction.
Its permanent venues in Philadelphia and Dallas cover more than 100,000 square feet and are free to enter. Visitors then pay for immersive experiences based on programmes such as Stranger Things, Squid Game, Wednesday and One Piece, with additional spending on virtual reality, games, food and merchandise. A third location is due to open in Las Vegas in 2027.
Netflix House does not compete directly with the large destination parks run by Disney or Universal. The company has chosen a lighter model inside major shopping centres, where it can combine attractions, restaurants and retail without building an entire resort.
The business stretches one piece of intellectual property across several sources of revenue. A series attracts subscribers, an immersive experience sells tickets, a restaurant gives visitors another reason to stay and a shop converts attachment to the programme into merchandise sales. Visitors then photograph the experience and return it to social media, where the material promotes both the venue and the original show.
Minecraft is making a similar move through a £50 million theme-park development at Chessington World of Adventures near London. Scheduled to open in 2027, Minecraft World will include a roller coaster, interactive attractions, themed dining and retail.
Pokémon has already opened its first permanent outdoor facility inside Yomiuriland near Tokyo. PokéPark Kanto combines a physical environment populated by hundreds of Pokémon with attractions, shops, food and activity inside Pokémon GO.
These businesses do not all own or operate theme parks in the conventional sense. Some develop venues themselves, while others rely on licensing and partnerships with experienced operators. In each case, however, a digital audience becomes the starting point for admissions, merchandise, hospitality and tourism revenue.
The appeal reaches beyond diversification. Streaming services and games compete continuously for screen time, while a physical experience asks for a larger commitment. Visitors travel, buy tickets, wait in queues, take photographs and often leave with something they can keep. The company gains an encounter that feels more substantial than another hour of viewing.
The Best AI Businesses Are Becoming More Specific
The first years of generative AI favoured broad models that could write, code, summarise and answer questions across many subjects. The market in 2026 still rewards those platforms, but the next group of companies is building around narrower problems where reliability matters more than fluent output.
Carina Hong provides a good example. The 24-year-old founder left a Stanford doctoral programme to establish Axiom Math, which is developing an AI system designed to solve difficult mathematical problems, produce formal proofs and check its own reasoning. The company raised $64 million in seed financing and was initially valued at around $300 million.
Hong belongs in a review of the internet because Axiom represents a change in what investors and customers may value next. General AI has made plausible answers abundant, but mathematics does not reward plausibility. The proof must work.
Axiom is trying to build authority in a field where the system can demonstrate how it reached the result and where another system or mathematician can verify it. The same demand will grow in law, finance, engineering, medicine and scientific research, where confident language cannot compensate for an incorrect answer.
The strongest AI positions in 2026 fall into five broad groups:
Infrastructure providers supply the chips, data centres and computing capacity on which the industry depends.
Distribution platforms place AI inside services that hundreds of millions of people already use, including search engines, office software and messaging products.
Enterprise specialists connect models with company data, established systems and regulated processes.
Lower-cost and open-model providers compete by making capable systems easier to adapt and less expensive to run.
Domain specialists apply AI to areas where expertise, verification or proprietary knowledge creates a barrier to entry.
This view is more useful than a ranking based on valuation alone. A chipmaker, a private model developer and an enterprise consultancy create value in different ways and cannot be compared through one financial measure.
The broader pattern is clear: AI has not removed specialisation. It has made credible specialisation more valuable.
Online Communities Can Turn a Private Event into Public Culture
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce married at Madison Square Garden in July with hundreds of guests and unusually strict limits on photography. Very little official imagery appeared during the event, despite intense public interest and crowds gathering outside the venue.
The lack of access did not prevent participation. It gave fans more material to discuss.
People speculated about the clothes, ceremony, guests and meaning of the few details that became public. The internet created a parallel version of the wedding through predictions, interpretations and conversations long before the couple released a conventional visual record.
Weddings already combine several subjects that perform well online: fashion, beauty, relationships, travel, family, design, status and ritual. A celebrity wedding adds an existing fan community whose members have spent years interpreting songs, outfits, public appearances and clues.
Brands cannot reproduce that level of attention simply by withholding information. Swift had already built the community, its shared references and its appetite for interpretation. Scarcity worked because demand existed before the information gap appeared.
The more relevant lesson concerns participation. Audiences often engage most strongly when an event gives them a recognisable story and enough space to contribute something of their own. They compare, predict, interpret and create material for one another instead of waiting passively for the official account.
That dynamic helps explain why communities have become so important to the wider internet. Their members do more than consume information; they supply context, experience, language and judgement that search engines and AI systems increasingly reuse.
Some Losers Believed the Story Would Build the Business
The internet has always produced compelling investment narratives before companies proved that they could turn attention into durable returns. Several sectors entered 2026 carrying the remains of earlier promises.Legal cannabis provides one example. Investors once expected legalisation to create a vast consumer market dominated by a small group of listed producers. Aurora Cannabis eventually found a more credible route through medical products and selected international markets, but that narrower business differs from the recreational growth story that drove the original enthusiasm.
European technology policy produced another optimistic assumption: stronger regulation of large US platforms would create room for local alternatives. Regulation has changed compliance obligations and increased scrutiny, yet it has not automatically transferred users, computing power or distribution to European companies. Governments can constrain a platform’s conduct, but they cannot make customers adopt an inferior product.

Computer science graduates should not be placed among the losers, although their route into the industry has become less predictable. Employers still pay heavily for advanced capability in AI, mathematics, infrastructure and security, while routine entry-level work faces more automation and greater competition. A degree continues to carry value, but candidates increasingly need to demonstrate what they can build, analyse or solve.
The contrast is striking. A founder with rare mathematical depth can raise tens of millions of dollars, while an otherwise capable graduate may struggle to secure a first role. The technology market still values talent, but it places a larger premium on evidence of unusual ability.
Search Is Becoming an Answer
Google’s AI Mode passed one billion monthly users within a year of launch, while the number of queries more than doubled each quarter. People are asking longer and more specific questions because the interface can develop an answer rather than simply return a list of pages.
That change weakens the old assumption that visibility begins and ends with a high search ranking.
Research into Google AI Overviews found that almost 30% of cited domains did not appear among the conventional first-page results shown alongside the answer. A company may therefore rank successfully and remain absent from the summary, while another source can gain a citation without holding one of the leading organic positions.
Third-party analysis of millions of US queries also placed YouTube and Reddit among the domains most frequently cited in AI Overviews. The exact order varies by dataset and subject, but the pattern matters more than the ranking. Search systems increasingly rely on demonstrations, discussions and experience-based material alongside traditional editorial pages.
For marketing teams, the conclusion is not simply to produce more videos or insert brand names into Reddit threads.
YouTube becomes useful when a company can show how something works, answer a precise question or allow a recognised specialist to explain a difficult subject. A clear transcript also gives search systems text they can interpret.
Reddit helps marketers understand what people ask when they are speaking to one another rather than to a company. A wealth-management software provider can study discussions about reporting, fees, security, account aggregation and adviser access to see which concerns buyers raise in their own language.
Entering those communities through disguised promotion is a weaker strategy. Reddit is already dealing with AI-generated posts and invented accounts designed to place brands inside conversations that search systems may later cite. As that practice grows, moderators and users will become more suspicious of commercially convenient recommendations.
Brands have a better chance of becoming citable when they publish specific evidence, useful explanations and clear demonstrations that other people can examine and reference.
The Next Internet Will Complete the Task
Search once helped users find a company. AI answers can now explain what that company offers. The next step allows an agent to use the service.
Anthropic developed the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, as a standard for connecting AI systems with external tools and data. By July 2026, MCP had exceeded 400 million monthly software-development-kit downloads, four times its level at the beginning of the year.
The scale of adoption suggests that developers are preparing for an internet where agents do more than read pages. They retrieve information from databases, call software tools and carry out authorised actions.
A hotel therefore needs more than a page describing its rooms. An agent must be able to check live availability and complete a booking. A retailer needs structured product and stock data that an assistant can access reliably. Financial software may need controlled interfaces through which an authorised agent can retrieve information or prepare a report.
The commercial progression can be described simply:
- The search web rewarded companies that could be found.
- The answer web rewards sources that can be cited.
- The agentic web will reward services that can be used.
Security remains a serious constraint because companies need control over identity, permissions, approvals and audit trails before allowing an agent to change a record, send money or place an order. Even so, the direction is becoming visible.
Marketing cannot build that infrastructure, but it needs to understand what it means. A brand may appear prominently in an AI answer and still lose the customer to a competitor whose service the agent can access more easily.
What Marketers Should Do in 2026
The current internet gives marketing teams five practical priorities.
Create evidence, not another layer of generic content
Companies need original data, precise explanations, useful comparisons and expert material that another source can quote or verify. Broad commentary written only to maintain a publishing schedule will struggle to earn attention when AI can generate similar material instantly.
Use video to demonstrate authority
A focused video can show the product, explain the process and give a specialist a visible role. Complete transcripts, clear titles and tightly defined subjects also make the material easier for search systems to understand.
Study communities before trying to influence them
Reddit and specialist forums reveal objections, expectations and vocabulary that formal customer research may miss. Marketing teams should use that knowledge to improve products and content rather than imitating users or forcing brand mentions into unrelated discussions.
Prepare the product for agent access
Marketing, product and technology teams need to identify which information or transactions an AI assistant may eventually need. Structured data, clear documentation and safe interfaces will become part of distribution.
Build something people can enter or join
Branded entertainment does not require a theme park. A company can create a documentary series, event, tool, game, learning programme or specialist community. The stronger formats give people a reason to spend time with the brand rather than interrupting what they already wanted to do.
The Internet Now Rewards What Others Can Use
The internet of 2026 is becoming less dependent on the individual website without making digital presence less important. Information now moves into generated answers, products become accessible through agents and online entertainment increasingly produces physical businesses.
The common factor is utility. A specialised AI company can prove its result. A streaming service can turn a show into a destination. A community can supply language and experience that machines cannot generate independently. A well-designed service can allow an agent to complete the next step.
Marketers therefore need to look beyond reach and publication volume. The more useful question is whether people, communities and AI systems can cite the company’s knowledge, use its product, participate in its world or carry its story into another setting. Businesses that can support several of those actions will hold a stronger position than those still trying to attract every customer to a page they control.
