The update improved reasoning, added support for images and audio and expanded tool use.

Apertus was trained on Alps, the supercomputer operated by CSCS in Lugano, and organisations can inspect the model, adapt it and run it on infrastructure they choose. EPFL has been doing exactly that on its own campus since August 2025, where staff and researchers can use AI models without sending university data through commercial AI clouds.

The Canton of Ticino uses Apertus for internal translation, keeping sensitive government documents inside its own systems. In Basel, Bajour runs the model locally to search years of cantonal parliamentary records.

EPFL researchers have also built MeditronFO on top of Apertus for medical language models, while Current AI selected Apertus for Alpha Chat, its experimental open-source chatbot.

These are still niche uses beside ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot. What they show is that a company or public body can choose where the model runs and keep tighter control over the data it processes.

When companies want to keep data closer

For routine office work, commercial AI remains the easier option. The provider runs the infrastructure, updates the model and deals with most of the technical work.

A bank building an assistant for client files has another set of concerns. The same applies to a pharmaceutical company working with unpublished research or a public authority handling confidential records.

The questions are fairly ordinary. Where is the information processed? Does the provider retain it? Can it be used for training? Who has access?

A company may be satisfied with the answers and stay with a commercial platform. Another may decide that one particular application should run on infrastructure it controls.

That choice brings work back inside the organisation. Servers need maintenance, software needs updating and someone has to manage security. EPFL can provide those services centrally for a large university community. Most SMEs will not build the same setup for everyday office tasks.

The computing power behind Apertus

Alps gives Swiss research teams access to computing capacity that would otherwise be difficult to secure without relying heavily on foreign cloud providers.

CSCS reports sustained performance of 434.9 petaflops and BF16 performance of 10 exaflops. The system includes thousands of NVIDIA Grace Hopper processors and more than 100 petabytes of disk storage.

When the Swiss AI Initiative launched in December 2023, it received more than 10 million GPU hours on Alps and CHF 20 million from the ETH Domain. More than 800 researchers from over ten Swiss academic institutions are involved.

Another 10 million to 20 million GPU hours are expected to be distributed during 2026. Some projects in the current allocation round are requesting more than 500,000 GPU hours each.

The figures are modest beside the spending of the largest US technology companies. They are still enough for Swiss teams to train and test large models without renting all of their computing capacity from the same international platforms they may later depend on commercially.

EPFL kept the infrastructure in-house

More than 130 models are available through EPFL’s internal AI platform, including Apertus, Mistral, Qwen and Llama.

Researchers and staff use them through one university-run service rather than opening separate commercial accounts. EPFL controls the infrastructure but does not insist on a single model.

A research group can therefore use one model for language work and another for a different task without moving its data onto an external commercial platform.

The service already supports clinical research, teaching assistants and internal chatbots. It also uses OpenAI-compatible APIs, so existing applications can connect without being rebuilt around a completely different interface.

EPFL has since linked the platform to the Swiss AI Research Platform at CSCS and has begun advising industry partners interested in similar setups.

A company considering the same route would rarely move everything at once. It might keep ordinary office AI with a commercial provider and run one system separately because it deals with confidential research, client information or internal documents.

Switzerland still depends on foreign suppliers

Alps runs on hardware from companies including NVIDIA and AMD. Open models also rely on software and technical components developed across several countries.

Running Apertus in Switzerland therefore does not make the system independent of foreign technology.

It does give the organisation more control over a few specific decisions: where the model runs, which model it uses and whether its own data leaves infrastructure it controls.

Most companies will probably stay with commercial AI for routine work. Banks, pharmaceutical groups and organisations handling confidential data may be more willing to pay for tighter control over where a system runs.

What is growing around Apertus

Apertus 1.5 handles more types of input than the first release, while Apertus Mini adds 16 smaller versions for systems with less computing power.

CSCS is working on an inference service for the Swiss academic community. EPFL already has its own service in operation, and the Swiss AI Initiative continues to allocate computing time to new projects.

Apertus is unlikely to replace commercial AI across Swiss business. It does, however, give companies and public institutions another option when they do not want every application and every dataset to depend on an external provider.

Switzerland is giving companies more control over where AI runs and how data is
