GPT-6 Astra points towards a different use. The new model has been trained to work across browsers, software and multi-step professional tasks, which brings it much closer to the systems where campaigns are researched, prepared, checked and delivered.

Astra launched in September as OpenAI’s most capable model so far, with stronger performance in computer use, browsing, research and professional work. It can operate software on a user’s behalf, follow longer sequences of instructions and produce documents, presentations and spreadsheets while respecting existing templates. Early access is limited, but the direction is already clear enough for marketing departments to start thinking about what they would hand over if an AI could work inside their tools rather than simply answer a prompt.

Take a campaign manager preparing a quarterly client review. Today, AI might summarise the campaign data after someone exports it. A more capable agent could collect figures from several systems, organise the relevant results in the client’s reporting format, identify an unusual drop in one market and prepare the slides for review. The marketer still decides what the numbers mean and what to recommend, but less time disappears into moving information between applications.

That distinction will matter to agencies as much as internal marketing departments because a large part of client work sits between the obvious deliverables.

The work between the deliverables

An agency may charge for strategy, creative, media or content, yet employees also spend hours checking whether approved copy made it into the correct campaign, updating spreadsheets, adapting decks, finding previous client decisions, reformatting material and collecting results before a meeting.

Astra has been built specifically for longer computer-based workflows. OpenAI says the model can work across browsers and professional software and follow templates more closely than earlier models. If that holds up in everyday marketing systems, the first savings may appear in those ordinary tasks rather than in another leap in copywriting.

A client asks for the latest performance of a campaign in Switzerland and Germany. The answer may sit across an analytics platform, advertising accounts, the CRM and an earlier presentation containing the agreed KPIs. An agent with the right permissions could collect those pieces before the account manager starts interpreting them.

The same principle applies earlier in a campaign. Research that now involves opening dozens of websites, copying information into notes and sorting it afterwards becomes a better candidate for delegation when the model can browse, compare and organise the material itself. The marketer’s job does not disappear from either process. It moves towards deciding what deserves attention.

Research becomes less separate from execution

Marketing research has traditionally produced something that a person then carries into another system. A competitor review becomes a document. Keyword research becomes a spreadsheet. A social audit becomes a presentation. Once the model can move between research and software, those boundaries become less fixed.

A team researching a new market could ask Astra to examine competitor positioning, identify recurring product claims, review search results and organise the findings according to an existing client template. A strategist might then reject half of what it found, add knowledge from interviews and decide which claims deserve testing.

The next request could continue from there rather than begin again: prepare three landing-page structures around the selected positioning, place them in the approved document format and create a briefing version for design. Earlier AI tools could produce each component individually. The more interesting development is continuity between them.

Marketing departments already struggle with information being repeatedly condensed and reconstructed as it passes between research, strategy, content, design and client approval. An agent that keeps the working context across those stages could remove some of that repetition, provided teams are disciplined about which information it receives and which decisions remain human.

Brand consistency becomes a systems problem

Generative AI created an awkward problem for brand teams. Producing material became easier at exactly the moment when controlling what everybody produced became harder.

Employees can already generate dozens of variations without asking the central marketing team. Agencies can create alternatives faster. Regional teams can adapt global campaigns. The cost of the first draft has fallen while the number of drafts has multiplied.

Astra’s stronger ability to follow existing templates and instructions gives marketing departments another option. Instead of expecting employees to remember a twenty-page brand document while prompting an AI model, companies can build the approved tone, terminology, formatting rules and examples into the workflow.

A product announcement prepared for Switzerland might need German, French, Italian and English versions. Each market still needs somebody who understands the language and audience well enough to catch poor adaptation, but the model can start from the same approved source material and follow the company’s established structure.

The harder part comes before generation. Someone has to decide what the rules actually are. Many brand guidelines were written for designers and copywriters, not autonomous software. “Sound confident but approachable” gives a model far more room than a rule explaining which product names must remain unchanged, which claims require legal approval and which wording the company never uses.

Marketing teams adopting agents will probably discover gaps in their own processes long before they discover gaps in the model.

Client approvals cannot become an afterthought

Astra can act on a computer, which raises a straightforward question for agencies: how far should it be allowed to go? Preparing a draft campaign in an advertising platform is one thing. Publishing it is another. Updating a reporting spreadsheet may be routine; changing a live budget is not.

The answer will depend on permissions. An agency could allow an agent to research, prepare drafts and populate systems while keeping publication, spending and client-facing changes behind human approval. More mature workflows may eventually allow routine actions within defined limits, such as updating an approved campaign variation without changing its budget or audience.

Those boundaries need to be explicit because a capable agent can complete the wrong task much faster than a junior employee making the same mistake manually.

OpenAI has given unusual attention to that problem with Astra. The company says it has improved the model’s ability to stay within the scope of an instruction and has introduced additional monitoring as models take on more computer-based work.

For marketing departments, the practical version is less dramatic than the wider AI-safety debate. Who is allowed to approve an advert? Which client documents can the system open? Can it update a CRM record? Can it send an email? Can it publish anything externally? Those decisions belong in the workflow before the agent receives access.

Reporting may change before creative work does

Creative output gets most of the attention whenever a new model arrives, but reporting is one of the more obvious areas for marketing teams to test first. The information already exists. The work is repetitive. Much of it follows a known format.

An international campaign might require figures from several advertising platforms, website analytics and CRM data to be consolidated every month. The account team then spends time checking the numbers, adjusting graphs and recreating a presentation whose structure barely changes.

Astra’s ability to work with spreadsheets, presentations, browsers and longer tasks puts much more of that process within the same system. A human still needs to investigate an unexpected conversion drop or explain why leads from one campaign were poor, but the hour spent putting the chart in the correct place is harder to defend.

Clients may notice the change indirectly. Agencies that spend less time assembling routine reports have more time to discuss what happened and what should change next.

The report itself may also become more responsive. Instead of one static monthly deck, an account manager could ask a question during a client call and have the underlying data checked while the conversation is still happening.

The agency relationship changes when execution gets cheaper

If AI reduces the time required for research, adaptation, reporting and routine production, agencies will eventually have to explain what clients are paying for.

Billing several hours for producing twenty social-media variations becomes harder when an agent completes most of the mechanical work in minutes. Charging for the judgement behind the campaign remains easier to defend.

That puts more pressure on work clients cannot obtain merely by giving a model access to their systems: understanding the company’s position, recognising a weak proposition, knowing when research contradicts management’s assumptions, judging what belongs in a campaign and taking responsibility when the recommendation is wrong.

Smaller agencies may gain something else. A team that previously lacked enough people to maintain several specialised workflows could use agents for parts of research, reporting and production without immediately hiring another person for every function.

Larger agencies gain scale from the same technology, so the competitive advantage will not come from having access to Astra. Access will become ordinary. How an agency organises the work around it is harder to copy.

Marketing departments will have to decide what AI is allowed to know

Giving a model more responsibility also gives it more context. A useful marketing agent may need access to campaign history, client correspondence, CRM records, performance data, brand guidelines and internal documents. The more complete that context becomes, the better the system can work – and the more carefully permissions need to be designed.

A regional marketer preparing a newsletter does not need access to every client contract. An agent analysing website performance does not need permission to send emails. A system preparing a presentation may need campaign data but not HR files.

Companies already manage these distinctions for employees. AI agents add another identity that needs its own access rules. Marketing teams should probably start with narrow jobs where both the input and the allowed action are easy to define. Collect last month’s campaign results. Prepare them in the approved reporting template. Flag missing data. Stop before sending anything to the client. Once that works reliably, the job can expand.

The first question for marketing teams is not what Astra can write

GPT-6 Astra will inevitably be tested on headlines, articles, adverts and campaign concepts. Some will be better than previous models and some will still need an editor.

The larger change is happening around those outputs. An AI that can browse, open software, use existing templates, work through a sequence of tasks and return with a completed file starts to resemble another participant in the marketing operation. It still needs instructions, access controls and somebody accountable for the final decision.

The teams that learn most from Astra over the next year are unlikely to begin by asking it to “do marketing”. They can start with one irritating piece of work that already has a clear beginning and end: preparing the monthly report, checking campaign assets against an approved brief, collecting market research or adapting an existing presentation for another client meeting. If the model handles that reliably, give it the next part of the process.

GPT-6 Astra is ushering in a new era for marketing
