A few hundred francs go into Google Ads, someone posts on LinkedIn when there is time, a newsletter is sent every few months, the website receives occasional RÉFÉRENCEMENT work and perhaps an agency produces social content on top of that. Each activity may be defensible on its own, but when money and attention are spread across too many of them, none receives enough support to work particularly well.

This is not only a problem for start-ups or very small businesses. An established company may also keep marketing expenditure low because most of its business comes through referrals, while a growing company may have ambitious sales targets without yet having the budget of a larger competitor. What they share is a practical constraint: they cannot support every channel properly, so the first decision should be where marketing can make the biggest difference rather than where the company feels it ought to be present.

Start with how clients actually find the company

A Geneva software company selling to banks may depend on recommendations, Google searches, industry events and LinkedIn, while a restaurant in Lausanne is more likely to rely on Google Maps, reviews, local search and Instagram. Even businesses selling similar services can differ considerably. One consultancy may receive most enquiries after its founder speaks at conferences, another may be found largely through search, and a third may depend on introductions from accountants, lawyers or existing clients.

Those routes to market give the budget its direction. If qualified visitors are already reaching the website but very few contact the company, paying for more traffic simply sends more people into the same weak journey. The problem may sit in the service pages, the evidence offered, the way the company explains what it does or the enquiry process itself. A business with the opposite problem may have a convincing website and strong references but little visibility outside its existing network, in which case another round of website improvements will do less than getting the company in front of the people it wants to reach.

The question is therefore not whether SEO, paid search, social media or email is generally effective. It is which part of the route from first contact to enquiry currently needs attention.

Get more from the website before adding another channel

Websites often receive the largest burst of attention when they are redesigned and much less afterwards. Over the following years, services change, client priorities shift and the company gains better references, yet the website can continue presenting an older version of the business.

That becomes more expensive once the company starts paying to attract visitors. Someone who discovers the business through Google, LinkedIn, an event or a referral will often visit the website before getting in touch, so unclear service pages or weak proof affect several channels at once. A company may therefore gain more from rewriting a key service page, adding a convincing case study or simplifying the enquiry process than from buying another month of traffic.

The same website work also supports search visibility. Specialist companies rarely need hundreds of articles covering every remotely related keyword; they usually have a smaller group of commercial subjects that deserve much more attention. A tax adviser in Zürich does not need to become a general financial publisher, and a cybersecurity company does not need to comment on every technology story. Both already know which questions clients ask repeatedly, where prospects hesitate and what they need explained before they buy, giving them a much stronger basis for content than a generic publishing calendar.

Use the questions the company already hears

Content can appear cheap because publishing itself costs almost nothing, but the internal work quickly adds up. Someone still has to find a subject, write the material, check it, obtain approval, create visuals and distribute it. When a company tries to maintain several channels independently, it can end up spending a considerable amount of staff time continually searching for something new to say.

Most businesses do not need to look very far. Sales teams hear the same objections repeatedly, client meetings reveal recurring questions, proposals show where prospects need more explanation, and product or service teams know which parts of the offer are often misunderstood. Those conversations provide material that is already connected to the company’s commercial work.

A substantial article might answer one of those questions properly, while LinkedIn can draw out one observation from it and a newsletter can bring the same issue back to people who already know the company. Sales can use the article later when the question appears again in a conversation. Instead of feeding several unrelated publishing schedules, the company develops a smaller body of material that keeps returning to subjects its clients actually care about.

Choose fewer social channels and give them a job

Social media becomes expensive less through platform fees than through the time required to keep several accounts active. That time only makes sense when the people the company wants to reach are actually there and the company has something credible to contribute.

For a specialist B2B company, a few hundred relevant LinkedIn followers may therefore be more commercially interesting than several thousand Instagram followers with little connection to its market. A local consumer business may find the reverse, because discovery, visual appeal and local recommendations play a larger role in how people choose it. Comparing follower counts across platforms tells management very little unless those followers resemble the people the business wants to reach.

This makes platform choice much narrower. A recruitment consultancy, engineering company or fintech supplier may decide that LinkedIn deserves regular attention because clients, partners and potential employees already use it professionally. A hospitality or design-led consumer company may have stronger reasons to invest in Instagram or another visual platform. Businesses serving a local market should also consider what appears when someone searches for the company directly, including reviews, photographs, opening information and location details.

Trying to maintain every available account usually weakens that focus. A company learns more from one or two channels used consistently than from four profiles that receive occasional attention whenever someone remembers to post.

Give paid advertising a specific job

Paid advertising works poorly when the brief is simply to create more visibility, because that tells neither the platform nor the company what kind of response it is trying to buy. Search advertising is strongest when people are already looking for a service or product the business provides. Social advertising can reach selected audiences before that search begins, but reaching the right professional profile does not mean the person currently has a reason to buy.

The difference affects how a limited budget should be used. A company looking for people with immediate demand may concentrate on a narrow set of search terms, while another launching an unfamiliar product may need to introduce the idea before anyone thinks to search for it. Dividing a small budget automatically between Google, LinkedIn, Meta and another platform can leave every campaign too weak to reveal much.

The page behind the advert is part of the same decision. Someone who clicks on an advert for a specific service should not land on a general homepage and then have to search for the information again. When the advert, landing page and next action answer the same need, the company can judge the campaign more clearly and is less likely to pay for interest that disappears on arrival.

Use email according to the relationship

A company does not have to pay a media platform each time it wants to contact people already in its database, which makes email attractive when budgets are tight. Its value falls quickly, however, if every address is treated as though it represents the same relationship.

Existing clients, former prospects, event contacts and newsletter subscribers have reached the company in different ways and usually have different reasons for hearing from it again. Someone who requested a quotation has shown far more commercial intent than someone who downloaded an article months earlier, while an existing client may be interested in a related service that would be irrelevant to the rest of the database.

Smaller businesses can sometimes use this to their advantage because employees often know more about the individuals behind the addresses. They may remember why a prospect did not proceed, what an existing client already buys or which issue brought someone to an event. Even modest segmentation can therefore make communication more precise without requiring sophisticated automation.

Automation is most useful where the communication is predictable, such as enquiry follow-ups, event reminders or onboarding. Newsletters require a different judgement: the company still needs a reason to enter someone’s inbox, and maintaining a fixed monthly schedule is not one by itself.

Keep specialist work where specialist knowledge is needed

Companies working with limited budgets often try to save money by bringing as much marketing as possible in-house, but the cheaper option depends on the skill required. A poorly configured analytics setup can leave management making decisions from unreliable numbers, while a badly structured advertising account can spend money before anyone realises what is wrong. Technical SEO, website migrations, brand design and some forms of paid advertising can therefore cost less when handled correctly by someone who already knows the work.

Outsourcing everything creates a different kind of waste because external specialists then have to learn information that already exists inside the business. They may spend paid hours discovering which objections sales hears, what clients ask during meetings or how specialists describe the product, even though employees deal with those questions every week.

The more efficient division often follows the location of knowledge. A company whose experts are comfortable writing and speaking publicly may keep LinkedIn and much of its content in-house while using outside help for analytics or paid search. Another company may have strong technical marketing skills but need editorial support to turn specialist knowledge into readable material. The split does not need to resemble a standard agency package; it only needs to reflect which skills the company has and which ones it does not.

Measure the result you actually need

Limited budgets make it particularly easy to mistake visible activity for progress. Website sessions, impressions, followers, email opens and video views can all describe what happened, but their value depends on what the company was trying to achieve in the first place.

A business trying to generate enquiries needs to know which activity brings the right enquiries and what happens once sales receives them. A company focused on existing clients should look at different behaviour, while an early-stage start-up may have to watch signs of awareness and interest before enough sales exist to draw stronger conclusions.

Measurement becomes much easier once it is tied to a decision. If LinkedIn takes ten hours of staff time each month but produces no identifiable conversations, referrals, website visits or other signs of interest over a meaningful period, management has a reason to reconsider how much effort goes into it. If a modest search campaign repeatedly brings enquiries that sales converts, the company has stronger grounds for increasing that spend than it does for celebrating a broad increase in website traffic.

B2B companies will rarely trace every sale neatly back to one post, advert or article because several interactions may happen over many months before a contract is signed. Perfect attribution is therefore less important than having enough evidence to decide whether an activity deserves more money, less money or no money at all.

A start-up with CHF 2,000 a month may spend several months improving its website and search presence while maintaining one social channel. An established small company with exactly the same budget may put most of it into a narrowly defined paid campaign because its website and sales process already work well. Another business may spend almost nothing on media because referrals and expert reputation generate most of its new work, making strong content and selected industry events a better investment.

The budget does not determine the marketing mix by itself. Where the company is currently losing attention, interest or enquiries does. A weak website calls for different spending from weak visibility, just as unclear positioning calls for different work from a shortage of traffic. Once the company knows which problem it is trying to solve, a limited budget becomes easier to concentrate instead of being divided among channels simply because they are available.

Contact us to design your digital marketing budget!

[139,79,115,114,116,118

post-13978","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-branding","category-digital-marketing-services","category-ppc-advertising","category-seo-services","category-social-media-marketing","category-web-design-development

Digital Marketing on a Limited Budget

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"Article","@id":"https://www.exporis.ch/digital-marketing-on-a-limited-budget/#article","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://www.exporis.ch/digital-marketing-on-a-limited-budget/"},"author":{"name":"Cathy","@id":"https://www.exporis.ch/#/schema/person/5730d61de1e8de711efd0476234e1e50"},"headline":"Digital Marketing on a Limited Budget","datePublished":"2026-09-03T04:59:36+00:00","dateModified":"2026-09-03T07:19:53+00:00","mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://www.exporis.ch/digital-marketing-on-a-limited-budget/"},"wordCount":2109,"image":{"@id":"https://www.exporis.ch/digital-marketing-on-a-limited-budget/#primaryimage"},"thumbnailUrl":"https://www.exporis.ch/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/limited-budget.jpg","articleSection":["Branding","Digital Marketing Services","PPC Advertising","SEO Services","Social Media Marketing","Web Design &
