Fenix International, the London company behind the platform, reported about $1.4 billion in net revenue and $520 million in profit after tax. By the end of the period, 4’634’000 creator accounts were registered on the platform alongside 377’456’000 fan accounts.

OnlyFans earns its money differently from Instagram, TikTok or YouTube. Creators usually attract people on public platforms, then direct some of them to OnlyFans, where Fenix verifies identities, hosts content, controls access, processes subscriptions and payments and keeps 20 percent of fan spending. The company does not need to sell those fans to advertisers because the fans pay directly.

For a founder or marketing director, the relevant part starts before the payment. Someone discovers a creator on TikTok, follows them on Instagram, sees more material on X or Reddit and eventually follows a link to OnlyFans. Many businesses can describe the first half of their own version of that journey in great detail. They know impressions, clicks, website visits and follower growth. Fewer can say exactly what makes someone take the next step, pay and then come back.

Discovery Happens Elsewhere

OnlyFans has limited organic discovery compared with the large social networks, so creators often acquire customers outside the platform. Instagram might maintain visibility with existing followers, TikTok can put a creator in front of people who have never seen them before, while Reddit or X can reach particular communities. OnlyFans enters once someone is willing to pay.

Fenix therefore earns nothing merely because a creator has a large following elsewhere. A creator with 2’000 paying subscribers can generate more income than someone with 200’000 followers who rarely buy anything. The 20 percent fee aligns OnlyFans with spending rather than visibility.

Companies face the same arithmetic even when the sale looks completely different. A specialist consultancy does not need a mass following if the right executives regularly request proposals. A software company gains little from traffic that never becomes a trial or sales conversation. A publisher can attract hundreds of thousands of readers and still struggle if almost none subscribe.

Marketing teams often continue reporting audience measures because those numbers are easy to obtain. They become less informative once the business needs to know whether the people behind them intend to buy.

Free Content Has to Give People Somewhere to Go

OnlyFans creators usually show enough publicly to attract interest while reserving more access, content or interaction for paying fans. If the free and paid experiences offer essentially the same thing, the subscription becomes harder to sell.

Corporate content often lacks such a progression. A company publishes a report, cuts it into LinkedIn posts, discusses the subject in a webinar, sends a newsletter and writes another article. All five pieces explain the same expertise to roughly the same audience. Someone can spend months consuming the material without encountering a reason to change from reader to customer.

Financial publishers draw the line more clearly. They publish headlines and selected analysis, then charge for deeper research or data. Software businesses let users perform some tasks for free before charging for additional functionality. Research companies release selected findings and sell the dataset or full report. Each business decides where free access ends according to what customers will pay for.

OnlyFans makes that decision unusually visible because the link between free promotion and paid access often sits directly in a creator’s profile. Most companies have more complicated funnels, but they still need an answer to the same problem: what does a prospective customer receive after taking the next step that was unavailable before?

OnlyFans Sells More Than a Paywall

A creator could put files behind a payment link without OnlyFans. That would not reproduce what the platform does.

Fenix verifies creators, hosts the material, collects money, manages subscriptions, controls access and provides messaging between creators and fans. When a subscription begins, OnlyFans knows which account paid and what that account can see. When payment stops, the platform removes access. The creator does not have to connect a payment processor, membership database, content host and access system independently.

Adult content adds requirements that many other subscription businesses do not face. CEO Keily Blair told a UK parliamentary committee that creators provide their legal name, date of birth, government-issued identification, a selfie, tax information and bank details during onboarding. People appearing in monetised content also have to meet age and consent requirements.

The controls have not always worked as described. Ofcom fined Fenix International £1.05 million in March 2025 after the company gave the regulator inaccurate information about one of its facial age-estimation systems. Fenix said the system used a challenge age of 23 when it had actually been set at 20.

Fenix cannot separate those controls from the service it sells. A platform that processes payments for adult material has to establish who is producing it and whether users meet the relevant age requirements.

Other businesses need different machinery after acquisition. A B2B company needs to connect a lead with the salesperson handling the account. An ecommerce retailer has to process payment, fulfil the order and recognise the customer when they return. A subscription publisher needs to know whether a reader has an active subscription and which material it unlocks. Advertising or SEO can deliver the visitor without solving any of those tasks.

One Customer Journey, Several Platforms

OnlyFans creators rarely expect every channel to produce an immediate sale. They use different platforms for different parts of the job because the platforms themselves work differently.

Companies often do the same without reflecting it in how they measure performance. Google Search reaches someone already looking for an answer. LinkedIn puts a business in front of a professional audience that might not currently be buying. Email keeps contact with people who already know the company. A product page has to explain an offer well enough for someone to act. In a B2B sale, a salesperson might still have to answer technical or procurement questions before money changes hands.

Judging all of those channels by immediate revenue produces bad conclusions. A LinkedIn post might never close a sale directly but still introduce the company to the person who becomes a customer six months later. A landing page cannot claim success because traffic increased if the additional visitors never request a quote or buy.

Creators also inherit a different risk from splitting the journey across platforms. The Instagram or TikTok audience does not belong to them in the same way as a customer database. An algorithm change, account restriction or platform policy can reduce discovery without anything changing on OnlyFans. Revenue then depends on one platform while customer acquisition depends on another.

Businesses often have equivalent dependencies. Google can control a large share of search traffic, Meta can provide paid acquisition, Stripe can process payments and a CRM vendor can hold customer records. A founder who knows which supplier controls each stage can see where a change in price, policy or access would hurt the business.

Payment Reveals What Engagement Cannot

A fan either pays or does not. Existing subscribers renew, spend again or cancel. Those actions attach money to customer behaviour in a way that views, likes and impressions do not.

A campaign with millions of impressions can leave sales unchanged. Website traffic can rise because an article ranks for a popular search term that attracts people who will never buy. A social account can add thousands of followers without delivering more qualified leads.

Subscription businesses encounter weak customer value quickly because it appears in churn. Acquisition produces the first payment; retention shows whether customers considered the product worth another one. OnlyFans creators therefore deal with the same questions as other subscription businesses: how much effort or money it takes to find customers, what price they will accept, how often they expect something new and why they cancel.

Fenix has different economics. It receives 20 percent whenever fans spend. An individual creator still has to earn enough after that fee and after the work required to attract and retain subscribers.

The platform’s 4’634’000 creator accounts therefore say little about how much a typical creator earns. OnlyFans does not publish audited country-level income figures. One independent 2026 database identified 2’092 active disclosed creators connected with Switzerland and estimated their combined annual revenue at approximately CHF4.9 million. It estimated an average of about CHF2’330 per creator per year and CHF224’000 for the leading account.

Those estimates are not Fenix financial disclosures, but a wide gap between the largest accounts and the average would resemble other platform businesses. Spotify can add subscribers without turning most musicians into high earners. Amazon can increase marketplace sales while many individual sellers remain small. YouTube’s scale does not make most channels full-time businesses. Fenix needs millions of transactions across the platform; each creator needs enough customers for one account to work economically.

AI Makes Generic Content Easier to Replace

AI-assisted software already helps creators edit images, alter backgrounds, write captions, translate material and speed up production. OnlyFans permits some AI-assisted content but keeps the verified creator tied to the account and requires users to identify AI use under its rules.

The same production change is reaching companies. A competitor no longer needs a large editorial operation to produce acceptable articles, images or videos. Generic material that once required several hours of professional work can now be produced much faster.

A business therefore has less protection in the mere existence of content. Proprietary data, expertise, access to specific people, a recognised reputation and an established customer base remain harder to reproduce. OnlyFans happens to anchor its product around a verified person. A software company, consultancy or publisher needs its own answer to what customers are buying that another provider cannot recreate cheaply.

What Happens After Someone Pays Attention?

OnlyFans generated $7.2 billion in fan payments from a structure in which discovery, conversion, payment and retention do not all happen in the same place. Someone sees a creator publicly, develops enough interest to follow a link, pays for access and then decides whether the experience deserves another payment.

A founder needs to know the equivalent sequence inside the company. Where did the customer first encounter the business? What prompted the next action? Where did the company ask for money? What changed for the customer after paying? Why did the customer buy again or leave? Which outside company controls each stage?

These answers separate acquisition problems from problems further down the funnel. A business with plenty of traffic and few sales has little reason to buy more traffic before fixing conversion. A paid product that barely differs from the free offer has an offer problem. Customers who buy once and disappear point towards retention rather than awareness.

Marketing reports often begin with how much attention a company attracted. Founders need the next part of the story: what happened to that attention after it arrived.

What Founders and Marketers Can Learn from OnlyFans

Know what each channel is supposed to do.
TikTok, LinkedIn, Google, email and a website do not need to produce the same outcome. Decide which channels create discovery, which ones move people closer to a purchase and which ones handle conversion or retention.

Find the point where attention becomes money.
Traffic, followers and impressions matter only if the business knows what happens next. Trace the path from first contact to payment and identify where people drop out.

Give customers a reason to move from free to paid.
If the paid offer looks too similar to what people already receive for free, more promotion will not solve the problem. The customer needs to understand what changes after payment.

Measure retention as seriously as acquisition.
The first purchase proves that somebody was willing to try the offer. Renewal, repeat purchases and continued use show whether the product justified the money.

Map your platform dependencies.
A company might rely on Google for discovery, Meta for paid traffic, Stripe for payments and a CRM provider for customer data. Founders need to know which supplier controls each stage and what happens if access, pricing or distribution changes.

Protect what competitors cannot reproduce cheaply.
AI lowers the cost of producing ordinary content. Proprietary data, specialist expertise, customer relationships, recognised identity and access to people or communities are harder to copy.

OnlyFans built a $7.2 billion economy by turning attention into a direct, paying
